How to Get from Brunei to Kota Kinabalu by Sea

Traveling from Brunei to Kota Kinabalu via sea offers a unique, scenic experience that takes you through peaceful coastal views. Below is a detailed guide on how to make this journey smoothly, along with a few helpful tips to ensure a hassle-free trip.

Step 1: Hail a Dart Taxi to Serasa Ferry Terminal

To start your journey, book a Dart Taxi from your accommodation in Brunei to the Serasa Ferry Terminal. The ride takes approximately 45 minutes, so be sure to leave early to give yourself ample time. Dart is Brunei’s version of Grab or Uber, making it easy to hail a ride from anywhere in the city.

Important Tip:

Make sure your passport is easily accessible, as you will need it at both ferry terminals and border control points during the trip.

Step 2: Buy a Ferry Ticket to Labuan, Malaysia

Once you reach the Serasa Ferry Terminal, head to the ticket counter to buy a ferry ticket to Labuan, Malaysia for 25 BND. Labuan is a small duty-free island that serves as a stopover point between Brunei and Kota Kinabalu.

Helpful Info:

Currency Exchange: It’s a good idea to exchange some Malaysian Ringgit (MYR) here at the terminal. I’d recommend exchanging about 100 MYR to cover small expenses like food and bus fares during your journey.

Motion Sickness Preparation: If you’re prone to seasickness, it’s best to take some motion sickness medication before the ferry ride. Luckily, during my trip, the sea was calm, but it’s always better to be prepared.

Seating Tip:

Try to choose a seat near the emergency exit on the ferry. These seats tend to offer more legroom, making the ride more comfortable, especially if you’re traveling for long hours.

Step 3: Take the Ferry from Labuan to Menumbok, Malaysia

Upon arriving in Labuan, proceed to the Labuan Ferry Terminal to purchase your next ticket, which will take you to Menumbok, Malaysia. The ticket costs 22 MYR, and the ferry ride is relatively short.

Step 4: Catch a Bus to Kota Kinabalu

After arriving at Menumbok, walk for about a minute to the bus area just outside the ferry terminal. You’ll find buses heading to Kota Kinabalu; look out for Sipitang Express or KK bus. The fare is 20 MYR, and the journey takes around 3 hours to reach KK Central.

Step 5: Hail a Grab to Your Accommodation

Once you’ve reached KK Central, the final leg of the trip is easy. Use the Grab app to book a ride to your accommodation in Kota Kinabalu. Grab is widely available in Malaysia and is a reliable way to get around the city.

Additional Tips for Travelers:

1. Border Crossing: Border checks are generally smooth, but have your documents ready, especially your passport.

2. Snacks and Drinks: Pack some snacks and water for the journey, especially during the bus ride from Menumbok to Kota Kinabalu.

3. Patience is Key: Be prepared for some waiting time at ferry terminals and during border crossings, so bring a book or download some podcasts to pass the time.

This journey may take some time, but it offers a great way to experience the coastal beauty of the region while traveling from Brunei to Kota Kinabalu.
